Here are some of the various treatments for acne scars:

One example is via laser treatments. There are two forms: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers remove outer layers thus, resurfacing the skin.  Non-ablative lasers create changes in the dermis without causing damage to the skin's surface.

Another example is the punch technique. There are three types: Punch Excision, Punch Elevation and Punch Grafting. Basically, these techniques use a small punch tool, used to cut the scar from the skin. These are used to treat depressed scars. Once the scar is removed, the skin is sutured closed.

Another new kind of acne scar treatment is Dermabrasion. Dermatologists can perform this using just local anesthesia. A rotating wire brush is used on the top layers of skin. Once it heals, pitted scars reduce in depth. This treatment is usually for depressed boxcar scars.

Yet another example is called Microdermabrasion.  It is not similar to Dermabrasion, though, as this once can be performed in a day spa. In this treatment, a machine is used to discharge ultra-fine aluminum oxide crystals through a tube and onto the skin. The crystals are simultaneously vacuumed away. A series of treatments is needed for this procedure.

Dermal Fillers is also an acne scar treatment that can be used for depressed acne scars. Basically, this treatment elevates the base of the scar to be more even with the skin’s surface. The downside of this one is that results are not permanent, so it must be done again after several months.
